The city of Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) was one of the major center of the front munitions. Economic power of the whole region was mobilized to meet the front needs and was sharply oriented to the defense production. The success in mobilizing economic output was a major factor in supporting combat operations. The city suffered air raids, electrical power and water supply cutoffs and strict food ration. Many factory workers were teenagers , women and old people. Despite constant bombing and harsh conditions, the city had been producing arms and food so needed by soviet soldiers fighting against the Nazi's invasion. During WWII Gorky's plants produced :

• 33.2% of tanks and self-propelled artillery systems

• 26% of aircrafts-fighters

• 35 % of trucks

• 50 % of submarines

• 60 % of radio equipment

• 143 hospitals were launched up

Severe life on the home front was a significant part of the war efforts for all citizens and had a major impact on the outcome of the Great Patriotic War (WWll)
