The whole history of Pskov is the history of the glory of Rus' on the battlefields. From time immemorial, the warrior city defended the borders of its homeland. It is enough to mention the Battle on the Ice, familiar from school.

The Great Patriotic War struck the city with all its might. The strategic location of this fortress relative to Leningrad made Pskov a target and initial objective for capture by the fascist command.

For almost three years, the Pskov residents resisted the invaders, and partisan detachments carried out sabotage and subversive activities. Pskov’s contribution to the Victory is adequately appreciated, and now it has the status of “city of military glory.”

The two swords crossed above the crown on the city’s coat of arms, the leopard and the right hand of God, as well as the motto “I will not give my honor to anyone” symbolize the uniqueness of Pskov.

As a result of successful military operations of the partisans, the First Partisan Region was formed in August 1941. The Partisan Region was a large quadrangle formed by railways running from the station. Bottom to Staraya Russa, from the station. Bottom to Bezhanitsy, and highways from Kholm to Bezhanitsy and from Staraya Russa to Kholm. Already in October 1941, the partisans liberated more than 300 settlements from the Nazis and established their control over a territory stretching from north to south for 120 km and from west to east for 90 km, the total area was 11 thousand square meters. km. It included the Belebelkovsky district, part of the Dedovichsky district and part of the Ashevsky district of the Kalinin region. From February 21 to March 5, 1942, the partisans organized a food train for besieged Leningrad. The partisan region played a huge role not only in the development of the partisan movement in the North-Western Front, but also in the Volkhov, Leningrad, and Kalinin fronts. The partisan region was the military, political, economic and territorial basis for the existence and struggle of the partisans. In the current Pskov region, Leningrad and Kalinin partisan brigades operated, which corresponded to the old administrative division. By 1944, there were 30 Leningrad brigades. Thirty-five thousand people fought in them. Twenty-two thousand partisans fought in 16 Kalinin brigades in the Pskov region.
