During the war, Rubtsovsk became a place for the evacuation of large factories. In October 1941, a train arrived here with equipment and workers from the Odessa plant named after. October revolution. The construction site for the future agricultural machinery plant was allocated on the southern outskirts of the city. In the north-west of Rubtsovsk, it was decided to locate a tractor plant evacuated from Kharkov. In August 1942, a decision was made to build the Altai Tractor Electrical Equipment Plant in Rubtsovsk on the basis of the Moscow ATE-1 and the Leningrad Carburetor Plant.

In 1941, the ASM plant began producing ammunition and sapper blades for the front. In three years, he supplied the army with about one and a half million shells of mines and hundreds of thousands of blades. In August 1942, the first ASHTZ-NATI tractor rolled off the ATZ assembly line. In July 1944, the first products bearing the AZTE brand were released. Employees of the enterprises worked under the motto “Everything for the front, everything for Victory!”, on their own initiative they increased the length of the working day, and took on increased obligations. Also, during the war years, factory workers provided great assistance to agriculture: they sent specialists to repair tractors and agricultural machines, and provided labor during the harvest period.

Throughout the war, residents of Rubtsov collected funds for the country's defense fund. Thus, the ATZ team alone collected 375 thousand rubles. for the construction of guns for the “Rubtsovsky Worker” battery of divisions and funds for the construction of tractors for the sponsored 56th Guards Rifle Division. Railway workers from Rubtsovsk took part in the construction of the armored train “Zheleznodorozhnik Altai” at their own expense. More than five thousand citizens were awarded state awards for valiant work during the war years.
