On May 5, 2011, President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev signed a Decree on conferring the honorary title "City of Military Glory" to Stary Oskol for the courage, steadfastness and mass heroism shown by the defenders of the city in the struggle for the freedom and independence of the Fatherland.

Tens of thousands of our countrymen went to the front and died during the Great Patriotic War. In the area of Stary Oskol, there were also fierce battles with the Nazi invaders. The steadfastness and courage of the soldiers of the Soviet Army held back the onslaught of the enemy and weakened his forces on the way to Voronezh and the Don.24 Starooskol residents were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Starooskol residents honor the feat of 17 armor-piercing fighters near the Maisyukova booth, who in February 1943 entered the battle and, at the cost of their lives, did not let the enemy through. The construction of the Stary Oskol-Rzhava railway by our fellow countrymen in record time is also a heroic deed of labor. This branch, strategically important for the Victory on the Kursk Bulge, was erected in just 32 days, in the summer of 1943.
