Among the few territories on the approaches to Moscow and Leningrad, the city of Borovichi was not only not occupied by the enemy, but also did not know any street fighting, bombing, or artillery shelling. “Borovichi has become a true hospital city. There are 22 of them deployed here,” military surgeon Vishnevsky wrote in his diaries. 10 schools, 5 residential buildings, and 9 administrative buildings were given over to hospitals.

The entire industry was transferred to a war footing. “Everything for the front, everything for victory!” They produced mortars, mines, shells, equipment for camp bakeries, cooking pots, army pots, camp baths, potbelly stoves for dugouts, stocks for rifles, machine guns, knitted sweaters, balaclavas, windings, gloves, sewed tunics, trousers. This list goes on and on. A city-hospital, a city-donor, a city that accepted orphans into its orphanages, a city-rear.

From 1942 to 1951 in Borovichi there was a distribution camp, and then a production camp of the NKVD of the USSR No. 270 for prisoners of war. In addition to prisoners of war, the camp included many Home Army soldiers taken from Poland at the end of 1944. To this day, there are houses in the city built by German prisoners of war. In the village Egla created the International Memorial of Memory, where memorial signs were installed by Finns, Germans, Poles, and Hungarians.

During the war, the Leningrad Regional Philharmonic, theatres, operettas, the regional drama theater and the puppet theater were evacuated to the city, which performed for the wounded, on the stage of the city theater, in neighboring areas, and went to the front.

The KIM clothing factory, which sewed tunics, trousers and other items of uniform for soldiers, was relocated from Leningrad to Borovichi; the Tsvetmetshtamp plant, which mastered the production of mines and shells. Plant No. 17, evacuated from Leningrad in April 1942 (future mechanical plant), mastered the production of 82-mm mines...
