Kozelsk is one of the leading cities in the Kaluga region.

It was first mentioned in the chronicles under the year 1146.

The events of 1238 are known in history - the old wooden fortress city

heroically resisted the Mongols for seven weeks,

as a result it was burned to the ground and named the "Evil City" by Batu Khan.

Batu Khan failed to take the city by storm. The Mongolian army tried to fire stones from a catapult,

but the hilly terrain did not allow them to reach the target. While the enemies were waiting for reinforcements, the defenders of Kozelsk carried out daring raids into the Tatar-Mongol camp at night.

The siege of the city lasted 7 weeks, the residents fought heroically, steadfastly withstanding the attacks.

Other Tatar-Mongol troops of Genghis Khan's descendants came to the aid of Batu Khan, the city fell under the onslaught of the invaders.
